My wife of nearly 17 years now and I have had a number of shared interests over the course of our relationship. In recent years, Broadway musicals has become our latest passion. With six kids we don't get many opportunities to go and see a show but on the several occasions per year when we are able to have a date night, our first choice is going to be whatever live musical happens to be showing in our area.
We're not traditional theater folk but we have found these live shows to be exciting and more fun to see than any other kind of show. I wanna say this phase really started when we were in the hospital after our twins were born. We had days there with nothing to do but wait so I opened up my laptop and turned on this "Hamilton" show I'd been hearing so much about.
It didn't disappoint and we were both instantly hooked. We watched it on TV multiple times, memorized the soundtrack, and have now seen it live three times. But we've been exploring many other shows too. Wicked, Come From Away, Les Miserable, and recently Mamma Mia plus a handful of others all of which we loved.
At this point, I'd rather see a live musical than most concerts, comedy shows, or movies. There really is something magical about them.
Last year, I decided to bring this passion to life with my scratch off poster business. I've been creating scratch off posters pertaining to niche interests for several years now and thought it would be super cool to have one for Broadway musicals.
Turned out to be a bit challenging to assemble. I did many hours of research to try and build a list of the Broadway musicals everyone must see before they die. The criteria was not simple. I factored in popularity metrics like box office gross sales and ratings. I looked at longevity. I tried to filter out shows which would be near impossible to see such as those no longer being performed. And I tried to include as much variety as possible.
It helped to have a close friend whom I share an office with who happens to be a much bigger musical lover than I am. He's seen most of the shows I was considering and counseled me regarding which would make the most sense to include.
I wanted to create a true bucket list for Broadway lovers which was both challenging but possible to complete. I wanted it to really included a wide variety of the most timeless and beloved theater musicals. I wanted to make something that looked nice to hang on the wall for a long time, especially since it could take years to complete for most people.
In the end I am pretty happy with the result. The poster came together nicely. Plus, it's been pretty well received getting mostly good reviews and selling reasonably well. I hope people like it as much as I do!
